But does good posture really mean forcing yourself to stand upright all day?

At the gym, I often hear members ask, “My posture is poor. Which exercises should I do?” There are also hundreds of recommendations online: stretch your chest, strengthen your back, pull your shoulders back…

However, the truth is not as simple as “Do these three exercises and fix your posture.”

Is There Really a Problem?

Having slightly rounded shoulders or a more curved-looking back does not necessarily mean that you have a postural problem.

Everyone has a different body structure and movement capacity. Therefore, it is not accurate to treat the “perfect posture” images we see on social media as a universal standard.

When assessing posture, we should consider not only how the body looks but also how the person moves and whether they experience any pain or limitations in daily life.

Stretching Alone Is Not Enough

When posture is discussed, stretching the chest muscles is usually one of the first recommendations. Flexibility exercises may be beneficial for some people, but they may not be enough on their own.

Mobility, strength and coordination can all affect posture. If you stretch for two minutes and then sit at a computer for eight hours, expecting a major change from your body is not realistic.

Strengthen the Back and Shoulder Muscles

For people whose shoulders naturally sit forward, strengthening the muscles around the back and shoulders may be part of the exercise programme.

Rows, face pulls and other pulling exercises can be used for this purpose. However, what matters most is not the name of the exercise but what the individual actually needs.

Instead of prescribing the same exercises to everyone, the programme should be tailored to the person’s movement capacity, strength level and daily habits.

Is One Hour at the Gym Enough?

If you exercise three days a week but spend 8–10 hours sitting during the rest of the day, relying solely on your workouts may not be enough.

Your working routine, computer and phone use, sitting time and overall daily activity level can also influence your posture.

The hour you spend at the gym is important, but the other 23 hours of the day matter too.

Why “Stand Up Straight” Is Not the Solution

Trying to keep your shoulders pulled back and your chest pushed forward all day can become tiring over time.

The goal of good posture is not to remain in a single position for hours. What really matters is being able to move comfortably and with control between different positions.

In other words, the best posture is not the one you hold constantly, but the one you can change regularly.

Increase Your Daily Movement

To improve your posture, try to move more throughout the entire day, not only during your workouts:

Stand up at regular intervals if you sit for long periods.

Walk while talking on the phone whenever possible.

Choose to walk short distances.

Adjust your workspace to suit your body and individual needs.

Avoid staying in the same position for extended periods.

These small changes can significantly increase the amount of movement in your daily routine.

How Long Does It Take to Improve Posture?

There is no single answer to the question, “How many weeks will it take?”

Your starting point, movement capacity, strength, training routine and daily habits all directly affect the process.

Instead of focusing on unrealistic promises such as “perfect posture in two weeks,” it is more effective to follow a consistent, sustainable and personalised programme.

Conclusion: Good Posture Is More Than Looking Upright

If you want to improve your posture, do not force yourself to stand rigidly upright throughout the day. First, understand how you move and what your body actually needs. Then focus on strength, mobility and coordination exercises that are appropriate for you.

Because good posture is not simply about looking upright. It is about using your body comfortably, strongly and with control.

İbrahim Pekünlü
Movement and Training Sciences Specialist
Fitness Supervisor

“Pull your shoulders back and stand up straight!” You have probably been hearing this phrase since childhood.
