Exercising every day for a few weeks in a burst of motivation is far less valuable than staying active regularly over the long term.

As someone who has been exercising for years, I can confidently say this: The people who stay consistent are not always the most motivated. They are the ones who make exercise a part of their lives.

So, how can you do that? It is actually not as difficult as you might think.

1. START SMALL

You do not need to push yourself to the limit from day one. We often see people say, “Starting Monday, I’ll exercise for an hour every day. No sugar, no bread, and no food after 8 p.m.” Then, by Wednesday, they are eating lahmacun.

You can begin with a 10–15-minute walk. The goal at first is not to do as much as possible, but to create a routine you can maintain.

2. CHOOSE A TIME THAT WORKS FOR YOU

Choose a time for exercise that genuinely fits your lifestyle.

If you are not a morning person, you do not have to wake up at 6 a.m. just because someone says morning workouts are better. If you feel more energetic in the evening, exercise in the evening.

I often see this with my clients as well. No matter how well-designed a program is, it cannot be maintained in the long term if it does not fit the person’s lifestyle.

The best time to exercise is the time that works for you.

3. CHOOSE AN ACTIVITY YOU ENJOY

Not everyone has to run.

If you do not enjoy running, go for a walk. If you do not like weight training, try swimming, cycling, dancing, or joining group classes.

Let’s be honest: If you hate every workout, maintaining it for years will be difficult.

The purpose of exercise is not to punish yourself every time. It is to find a form of movement that makes you feel good.

4. SET SMALL GOALS

Big goals such as “I will lose 15 kilograms in three months” or “I will exercise six days a week” may feel motivating at first, but they can become overwhelming over time.

Instead, set achievable goals such as:

“I will exercise three days this week.”

“I will walk for 20 minutes today.”

“I will be a little more active this week than I was last week.”

In my experience, the best results do not come from people who experience a sudden burst of motivation. They come from those who consistently take small steps over time.

5. MAKE EXERCISE EASIER FOR YOURSELF

Sometimes, the reason we do not exercise is not laziness. It is because we make getting started unnecessarily difficult.

Prepare your clothes the night before. Keep your gym bag ready. If you are going for a walk, leave your shoes by the door.

If you wake up and start wondering, “What should I wear today? Where are my shoes? Is my bag ready?” your brain will immediately hold a meeting and decide:

“Let’s rest today. We’ll start on Monday.”

The fewer obstacles there are, the easier it becomes to start.

6. TRACK YOUR PROGRESS

Do not focus only on the number on the scale.

Keep track of how many days you exercise, how long you walk, how much weight you lift, or how many repetitions you complete.

Changes may not always be immediately visible in the mirror or on the scale. However, if you could walk for only 20 minutes two months ago and can now walk for 40 minutes, or if a weight that once felt difficult now feels easier, you have made significant progress.

Seeing your progress will also help increase your motivation.

7. DO NOT QUIT IF YOU MISS A DAY

I believe this is the most important point.

Life does not always go according to plan. You may become busy, get sick, travel, or simply not feel like exercising.

If you miss one workout, do not say, “I’ve ruined my routine. I’ll start again on Monday.” Monday can be a truly dangerous day.

Missing one day is not a problem. What matters is continuing again the next day.

You do not have to follow a perfect exercise program. Sometimes, taking a 20-minute walk instead of completing a one-hour workout is enough.

The goal is not to avoid missing a single day. It is to know how to start again whenever you do.

İsmail Bilgiç
Fitness Instructor

Starting to exercise is great, but the real challenge is staying consistent.
