DOES METABOLISM REALLY SLOW DOWN?
DOES METABOLISM REALLY SLOW DOWN?
“Coach, I guess our metabolism crashes as we get older…”
This is something I hear from clients very often.
Yes, the body does go through certain changes with age, but in most cases, the “metabolism crash” people imagine is not as dramatic as they think. What usually changes more is our daily lifestyle habits.
Why Does Metabolism Feel Slower?
Metabolism is the energy your body uses to perform essential functions such as breathing, circulation, and cell renewal. However, as people get older, they generally become less active, sleep more irregularly, and spend more time sitting throughout the day.
At the same time, if muscle mass is not maintained, it gradually starts to decrease. As muscle loss increases, daily energy expenditure also drops. As a result, when someone continues eating the same way, gaining weight becomes easier.
So most of the time, the issue is not age itself — it’s the decrease in movement and activity.
Muscle Mass Is the Key to Metabolism
Muscle tissue is active tissue that constantly consumes energy. The more active muscle mass you have, the more calories your body burns throughout the day.
Especially after your 30s, muscle loss can accelerate if resistance training is neglected. This can lead to an increase in body fat percentage and make people feel more “sluggish” physically.
I always tell my clients:
“Muscle mass is the strongest insurance policy for weight control.”
What Should You Do to Support Your Metabolism?
Supporting your metabolism does not require miracle solutions — it requires consistent habits.
Strength training a few times a week, consuming enough protein, increasing daily movement, and getting quality sleep are some of the most effective strategies.
Even simply increasing your daily step count can make a significant long-term difference.
In short, metabolism may change slightly with age, but lifestyle is what creates the biggest impact.
People who protect their muscle mass, stay active, and pay attention to their nutrition can remain fit and strong even as they age.
“Aging is inevitable. Staying fit is a choice.”
